News Flash: AI is the New UI and We Should Use It

Updated: Aug 9

Dr. John presents on the notion that "AI is the new UI," a concept discussed with Terry Jones, the chairman of Kayak and first CEO of Travelocity. This idea encapsulates the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on user interfaces and interactions across various platforms.

The growth and impact of AI and social media have been monumental, as Dr. John explains.  YouTube's user base of 2.5 billion exceeds the population of any country, demonstrating the platform's massive influence. Similarly, social media, particularly on mobile platforms, has become a dominant force, with Facebook leading the way. ChatGPT represents the rapid adoption of AI technologies, achieving 100 million users within two months, highlighting the speed at which AI-driven platforms are embraced.

User interfaces are evolving rapidly with the integration of AI. Traditional UIs are being enhanced with semantic analysis and semantic matching, integrating layers of AI that improve usability and functionality. Tools like Slack, Email, SharePoint, Google Docs, and Notion are incorporating these technologies to create more intelligent and interactive user experiences. This new UI architecture allows for more efficient interactions, and good data management policies.

Character AI, Dr. John notes, serves as a compelling case study in the presentation. Character AI, a leading Generative AI platform, boasts over 20 million users, and offers features like personality selection for conversations. The platform allows users to engage in human-like dialogues for various purposes, such as language practice or planning trips, making AI interactions more relatable and practical. This capability is particularly attractive to younger users, and demonstrates the potential for AI to revolutionize how we interact with technology.

Internally, companies struggle with data management across platforms like Slack, Notion, and Google Docs, due to the lack of a cohesive semantic and interrogation layer. Solutions like Glean and Node AI address this by integrating different data sources into a single, interrogable interface, facilitating more efficient data retrieval and usage. These solutions highlight the potential for AI to streamline internal processes as they improve organizational efficiency.

The presentation provides practical steps for organizations to experiment with new UI paradigms that incorporate semantic layers, integration, and dialog. For instance, implementing Node AI can cost between $10,000 to $50,000 and be set up within weeks, integrating with tools like Slack, Google Drive, and Microsoft Outlook. These examples underscore the feasibility and potential benefits of adopting AI-driven interfaces.

Feedback from users and employees, Dr. John points out, is crucial in determining the success of these new AI-driven interfaces. Organizations are encouraged to gather feedback from customers and employees regarding these new UI paradigms. This feedback will help determine the effectiveness and acceptance of dialog-based and integrated interactions, ensuring that the implemented solutions meet user needs and expectations.

The presentation concludes by emphasizing the importance of human connection in the digital age. Platforms like Meta (Facebook) and visual networks like YouTube and TikTok demonstrate the power of social and visual media in their spaces. Dialog-based AI, as exemplified by ChatGPT, represents a significant shift towards more natural and engaging user interactions. Dr. John argues that we are on the brink of a new era in user interfaces, driven by AI's ability to enhance both internal and external interactions. Organizations are encouraged to experiment with these new technologies, gather feedback, and adapt to the evolving landscape of AI-driven UI to stay competitive and meet user expectations.
